HOW TO KEEP CATS COOL DURING THE SUMMER HEAT: hot weather pet care tips, prevent cat heatstroke

During the summertime, it’s important to keep your furry friends cool! Scottish Fold cat Basil Farrow and his mom, La Carmina, share tips for beating the heat. 1) Leave several bowls of cool water around the house. Replenish often. 2) Groom your pets regularly: shaving or brushing. 3) Wipe down your cat’s body with a cool, wet towel. 4) Keep your house well-ventilated, but go easy on the AC and fans. 5) Lick the occasional spoonful of organic, plain yogurt. 6) Ensure there are cool areas for your pets to rest. – Remember… a cool cat is a happy cat! *** Check out tons of Basil’s cute kitty pictures on his blog: lacarmina.com *** SONG: Byakkoya no Musume, from the Paprika soundtrack. – FOR MORE LA CARMINA – Look out for her upcomingbooks, Crazy, Wacky Theme Restaurants (July 09) and Cute Yummy Time (Nov 09 on Perigee/Penguin USA). This summer my cat was having a really hard time with the heat. I read online that cats cool down through their stomach and chest, hence the sitting on plastic bags. My cat was panting like crazy and not really drinking, so I followed the advice in this article and put down a cool wet towel on the floor, then lay him out so the surface of his chest was against the towel. It worked really well. The only thing is you don’t want to have the towel too cold or the shock can cause cardiac arrest!

What a beautiful cat. He didn’t seem to like being wiped with the damp towel, but he loved having his neck and head rubbed.

These are excellent tips, I will def. use some of them for my cats this summer. Sometimes, I like to give them a spoonful or two of vanilla ice-cream. They seem to like that.

I gave a friend a furminator for her extra hairy long haired rescue. It is a special kind of brush that just removes the downy underlayer of the fur. The cat was much happier and lighter. Just don’t go over the tummy/nipple area at all (ouch), or go too much over the tail, spine and bony joints or the cat might start to look like a possum.
