Natural Pet Home Remedies – Dog Ear Mites

Dogs suffer from ear problems all too often. Is your pet shaking his or her head a lot? Or maybe scratching away at the ears with its paw? This could well be a sign of an ear infection. The good news is that you can treat most ear infections with home remedies. Dog ear mites can be eradicated with the details shown in this article.

Ear infections are most commonly caused by microscopic ear mites. They are tiny parasitic arachnids that feed on the capillaries in your pet’s ear. Invisible to the naked eye, they irritate the tender skin which then causes inflammation. Wax production increases and builds up in the narrowed ear canal and can cause blockages. No wonder they start shaking their heads!

The best way to treat the ear infection is with a herbal remedy that will help to clear the ear canal, soothe the inflammation and restore the balance of healthy bacteria.

Follow these instructions to apply:

Tilt his head to the side, lift the ear flap and add a few drops of the solution to fall into the ear canal. Hold the ear flap down and massage gently. Wipe any excess away. He’s going to want to shake his head afterwards so let him before repeating on the other ear. Wipe the ear flap clean with cotton wool. Don’t put anything inside the ear canal as you’re likely to do some serious damage. Please don’t use Q-tips or cotton buds.

If you have any other pets in the house, they all need to be treated too. Ear mites are very contagious and are often picked up from other animals. This is the most likely source of the infection.

Prevention must be a part of any home remedies. Dog ear mites can be kept at bay by taking a holistic approach to your dog’s health.

Make sure they have a good nutritious diet. Dogs should be groomed regularly and checked for any skin issues. Bathe your dog once every couple of months. Keep dog bedding clean and regularly washed. You can also use a maintenance dose of the herbal ear infection treatment if your dog suffers frequently from ear mites.

In summary, if your dog is shaking his or her head, then it’s a sign that there could be something wrong with their ears. Ear mites are the most common culprit. This is really uncomfortable for your pet so please take action straight away. If you follow the steps above you will be able to prevent and treat most dog ear infections yourself.

Home Maintenance

Nothing is more important when you own a home than maintaining it. Just the other week, I was talking to someone who was telling me about how her house was falling apart. She was in the middle of having work done on the house after over ten years of not making any updates to her house. She exclaimed to me, “It’s like you suddenly wake up one day and realize that everything around you is falling apart…and what’s worst is that it all could have been prevented!”

Prevention is better than cure, and nowhere else is this more true than in your home. Don’t wait for faucet caps to break and cabinets to start unhinging themselves from the walls. Always keep your eyes and ears open for the latest trends in home improvement and home repair. Doing something as simple as hiring an interior decorator can do wonders for an older house. Sometimes it is just a matter of furniture placement, draperies and lighting. However, other times, you have to be prepared to spend a little more money. The ironic part of it all is though that you wouldn’t have to spend so much money later if you take care of things over the years.

When you invite someone over to your house, is the first thing that you want them to see how your house is falling apart? Allowing your home to fall apart says a lost about you as a homeowner. If you’re not careful, you could leave your guests with the eerie feeling that you don’t care a great deal about your home or the people who inhabit it. People make all sorts of excuses for home maintenance, the most common excuse being that they were simply too busy to pick up the vacuum or do the dishes. The fact of the matter is, however, that when things are truly important to us, we make the time.

Make your home a priority. Do the work that needs to be done in order to have it look amazing in the long run. If you’ve just bought a house with someone and are trying to show off, it will only come back to bite you in the end. If you have animals, assign duties to your children or your spouse so that the responsibility for owning the pet falls evenly on everyone. It will also keep the pet happier as well. It is important to try to maintain a healthy, clutter free house so that if guests stop by, things will look presentable. This is how you should always treat your home or anything you own- with respect.

Part of maintaining your home includes making sure that you are being as energy efficient as possible. When you’re not actively using the water, make sure that it is shut off. For instance, don’t run showers to “warm them up” prior to you getting in. When washing your hands, lather up first with soap and then rinse off under warm water. Try to use cold water when doing laundry or whenever possible because it uses less energy. Take less showers. All of this helps towards maintaining a beautiful home.

Some Thoughts About Home Improvement & Maintenance

Some of the things we do in our homes are considered home improvement and other things are considered maintenance but it can be said that, in the end, doing maintenance will usually lead to home improvement. Let me give you an example of the relationship between home improvement & maintenance. I have cats and when they were kittens they decided that certain spots on my rugs were litter boxes. After much effort, and swearing, I got them to use the litter box but the damage to the rugs was done.

I tried maintenance like cleaning and things like that but in the end I wound up cutting huge chunks of my fairly new rugs up to get rid of the smell and stop the cats from damaging more of the rugs. My wife loves hardwood floors so now she has decided that since the cats have ruined the rugs, and my attempts to clean the rugs have not been totally successful.

We will now have hardwood floors. That is the relationship between home improvement & maintenance, sometimes continued maintenance on a problem area can lead to an act of home improvement that, in the end, was probably the best thing for that whole situation in the first place.

Another example of the relationship between home improvement & maintenance is my back porch gutters. I have my roof, which of course has gutters on it, and then my deck is all in my back yard. I live in snow country so the snow can accumulate in the gutters if not watched. I have been maintaining the situation for a couple years by getting a telescoping device that allows me to get the snow off my roof so it cannot get into my house by melting.

But, it is obvious that this maintenance is temporary and home improvement by way of new eaves is necessary. But this is the dynamic between home improvement & maintenance, you do maintenance for as long as you can and then eventually home improvement is needed. It is just a matter of getting a good feel for that relationship between home improvement & maintenance and knowing when it is time to do home improvement.

Don’t Wait Too Long

Sometimes maintenance measures may seem like they are working but then you find out the hard way that they are not. If you have been patching your roof for some time you may think everything is fine but water could be getting in where you can’t see it and then that home improvement & maintenance dynamic needs to shift to home improvement before real damage, or more damage, is done. It is important to always know when it is time to stop maintaining and start improving.

Keep an eye on your house and do not dismiss any potential problem as small or petty. Sometimes it is the smallest problems that grow up to be the biggest headaches and that is something you need to understand in the balance between home improvement & maintenance.

7 reasons why keeping chickens at home can make great pets

On an average day, if someone asked you if you wanted to have chickens, you’d probably laugh at them. Most people think that the tending of farm animals ought to be left to the farmers, and are content to merely eat them. This is kind of sad, because not only is it not that hard to keep chickens, but they are actually fine pets, on par with any of the standard animals that people like to own. Everyone knows that the dog is man’s best friend, but the chicken will not only be a dearly beloved pet, but will also pay its way at the breakfast table! What more could you ask for?

1. Chickens pull their weight

Chickens can provide

Wonderful fresh eggs – from humanely kept birds in far happier conditions than most famed birds Compost for the garden from their nitrogen rich waste Natural pest control – chickens devour insects, slugs and other pests Low fat and healthy meat Intriguing pets Low maintenance and easy to nurture A great talking point for you and the neighbours

2. You dont need lots of land to keep chicken.

“More space for chickens” may be the common  cry of most chicken lovers, but a few little bantams can do the trick in quite compact spaces. Successful chicken houses and runs can fit into the majority of gardens and back yards. Outbuildings or even old sheds can be transformed to perform the task. All that the chickens need is to nest in the day, space to move around and to perch at night safe from predators .

Understandably, some tenancy and housing agreements or deeds can have exclusion clauses to the keeping of poultry and specifically cockerels in urban areas. Even though in many cases you don’t need permissions or registration to keep a small flock, it is still advisable to recheck this aspect before you plan to bring some chickens home.

3. There’s no time needed to look after them

Is there just not enough time in your busy work schedule to walk a dog? No worries! Consider a chicken. Chickens never need you to stimulate them or exercise with them as long as you have them for company. Chickens will even put themselves to sleep as long as you leave some clean drinking water and chicken feed around. Plus, they’re a real treat to watch, especially the daily, after-sundown roosting ritual. A tame chicken, though, is one that gets the occasional care and attention of a caring owner. With some time and offerings of food, you’ll be able to feed them straight from your hand. Just my walk to the chicken run through a squeaky gate will trigger those chickens on a near stampede in hopes that I have some bread for them, even though we like to believe that the chickens are happy to see us.

4. Raising chickens is not expensive

Keeping any pet does have its expenses but chicks are very inexpensive unless you start getting into the fancier varieties. They are a relatively cheap pet to have and  not to mention also that you will enjoy some of the best freshly laid eggs that you have ever tasted.

5. Building a chicken coop is not hard work

Well you can build yourself a chicken coop from scratch using one of the many plans available. Better however to purchase a coop ready made. There are now some very good coops and runs on the market (e.g Forsham, Taylors and Amazon to name a few) and they are widely available. Check online

6. Chickens can be tamed and are no good as pets

Chickens are intriguing. They will come to you when they see you in the morning with a spring in their step. As if they are expecting you. They will follow you around the garden and keep your company as long as you are there. They are surprisingly interested in your attention with them and you will be surprised and probably will disagree with their headless chicken reputation after you have cared for them for some time.

7. Chickens are not prone to illness

Chickens are quite robust creatures. Properly cared for, they will remain happy and healthy. If you ensure clean housing, freedom to roam and a healthy diet, they should only need minimal medical attention. The better you know your chickens, the quicker you would notice any issues they contract though it is fairly rare for them to become seriously ill. It would be advisable to research chicken husbandry to have knowledge of health concerns that affect chickens, i.e. red mite, scaly leg mites and worms. One constant danger is that of avian flu and you should monitor the DEFRA website as a safeguard.     Our hope would be that you would consider chicken keeping as it is not as onerous a task as many think. The benefits include always having a conversation piece and with free-range eggs to offer, you will find your popularity soaring!

Home Maintenance Tips – How to Keep Your Carpets in Mint Condition

If you have carpet in your home, you want to keep it looking as nice as possible. This means your carpets will need to be cleaned from time to time. Vacuuming is important too, but some deep cleaning is important. If you have dirty carpet, the dirt will end up wearing away at the fiber of the carpet, which makes your carpets wear faster and look bad faster. Of course, you may be wondering how often you should be cleaning your carpets in the first place.

There are actually several different factors to consider when you are trying to figure out how often to clean your home. First of all, consider the number of people in your home. If there are only a couple people in the home, you can wait longer between cleaners. However, a home that has four or more people should be cleaned at least twice a year.

If you smoke, you’ll want to have your carpets cleaned more often. Usually it’s best to clean it about every four months or so in this case. Another factor is whether or not you have small children. If you do, you probably have spills on a regular basis, this could mean you need to clean more often than every six months. Pets are a factor to consider too. With pets, you’ll want to do the home at least twice or more each year, and if you have pets and some little kids, every 3-4 months is probably a good idea.

Of course, these ideas aren’t always absolute. If you start to notice that there are dark areas on the carpet at any point in time, it’s a good idea to call the cleaners to have the carpets taken care of. If you wait too long, you’ll do more damage to the carpets, so you shouldn’t wait if your carpets look very soiled and dark.

Now that you now how often you should clean your carpets, you may want to know how to choose a good carpet cleaner. There are definitely several things to consider. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you make your selection:

Method and Equipment Used for Cleaning – There are different methods and types of equipment used for cleaning carpets. Check to see what methods the cleaners use and do a bit of research to find out which method is going to work best in your home.

Check out the Price – It’s also a good idea to check out the price of cleaning your carpets. Sometimes you can find some great deals if you look around and compare prices. Just makes sure that you don’t sacrifice quality for the price.

Bonded and Insured – Any cleaners you call out to do your home should be bonded and insured. You never know what could go wrong if there is a problem you want to make sure that you aren’t out money if there are any damages. Never hire a cleaning service that is not bonded and insured.

Get References – It may take a bit of homework on your part, but get some references from the cleaners. They should be happy to give you references. Make sure that you get positive comments from the references you call. Consider checking with the Better Business Bureau as well to see if there are complaints or if they have a good record.

Cleaning your home carpets is important. Clean carpets look better, cut down on sickness, and help to preserve the value of your home. So make sure that you clean them on a regular basis to keep them looking beautiful.

For a recommendation for a good carpet cleaner in your area, consult with your Realtor. Most Realtors have dealt with dozens of contractors and are able to give excellent recommendations. Of course, if you’re in Boulder Colorado, or Longmont Colorado, ask Automated Homefinder.

Caring For Your Cat : Keeping Your Cat Healthy and Your Home Clean

There’s no question that our cats are really a family members! Their loyalty, their love, and their ability to comfort us are unparalleled. Sometimes, though, their hair or odors can leave an unwelcome foot prints in our homes. Just as we clean up the spills made by our kids it’s up to us to clean up after our cats. Luckily, there are any numbers of products that make pet care a breeze.

Cat Litter Boxes:
Cats are generally low maintenance pets, but their litter boxes do very little to contribute to our home decor, and can become a smelly nuisances well. Today’s litter boxes, though, can bring a touch of color to your interior design, while their functionality can put an end to messes and odors.

One line of litter boxes comes in an assortment of patterns and colors, from solid silver and solid black, to polka dot, and wood grain. The litter tray door pulls out, and the automatic litter pan the metal sifter rake pulls and lifts litter out of the tray for easy cleaning. Another ingenious design has a triangular shape so that you can easily place it otherwise used corner space.

If you want to make cat care even easier, self-cleaning litter boxes are the answer. One style has an internal grill that traps used litter. You simply roll the enclosed litter box on its side and remove the waste tray. Another type takes self-cleaning to the next level by having a slowly but rotating system that quietly but continuously scoops used cat litter into a receptacle. The ultimate litter box is one that automatically flushes cat waste down your toilet. Instead of cat litter, this box uses permanent granules that are washable.

Kitty Litter:
When it comes to kitty litter, many cats have a preference for one brand over another. But if you start with the right litter or are persistent, you can find kitty litter that can help eliminate odors while keep your cat healthy. One particular brand of kitty litter on the market not only neutralizes litter box odors, but also changes color if your cat has a urinary tract infection. Given that urinary tract infections in cats can quickly become life threatening, early detection is very important to your cat’s health. It’s also helpful to have information about a potential infection to give to your veterinarian.

Shedding Tools
Many people who love cats are troubled by allergies, or by the cat hair that clings to furniture and clothes. Products that help with shedding take one of two approaches: either they work at the source of the problem your cat or they make it a snap to clean up hair off of furniture.

Cats typically shed their undercoat not just the top coat, so a product that helps you remove hair from your pet – means you’ll never see it on your couch. These products brush out the dead hair from the undercoat but won’t cut it, while bringing your cat’s natural oils to the surface. Because this type of product also helps stops over zealous self-cleaning, your cat may be less likely to be bothered by hairballs.

Cat care isn’t difficult, and the great litter boxes, kitty litter, and shedding tools make it even easier!

Why Do Cats Star In So Many Funny Home Videos?

For thousands of years going back to the Ancient Egyptians, cats have been put on public display. But the first cat shows in the United States, held in Maine, didn’t appear until between 1860 and 1870. Finally, in 1895, a show clawed its way into New York City, hosted in Madison Square Garden.

Badoop-badoop! Fast-forward to the present: Cat clubs and cat fancy organizations are everywhere, holding local, state and national shows in every part of the country. And no wonder: If you search YouTube, either online or on your TV with your TiVo HD DVR, it’s very clear that you don’t have to be a cat breeder to be easily amused and entertained by the very funny videos featuring endless breeds of cats–from hilarious cat bloopers to just cute cat behaviour. But what’s missing from most of these viral videos are a the cat fanciers themselves, who regularly travel across the country attending cat shows. Talk about a special breed of PEOPLE! Perhaps you’re familiar with the crazy cat lady on some of The Simpsons episodes? I guess they’re not all THAT crazy–are they?

So… I went to Pleasanton, California with a very clear mission: to find out just how crazy people can get about cats–and, while I was there, to learn out how well they know their famous felines of Film and Television with our very first Badoop-Badoop Cat Quiz!

What better place to get a close-up perspective of the cat fancier lifestyle than the Crow Canyon Cat Show! I couldn’t believe all the cats I saw: Siamese cats, known for their legendary voice and captivating blue eyes; Persian cats, with their long flowing coats and open pansy-like faces; Himalayan cats, actually a Persian cat with the color pattern of a Siamese cat (who knew?!); the Egyptian Mau, which were worshiped as deities in ancient Egypt; the remarkably dense and muscular Tonkinese; Burmese cats, often described as “bricks wrapped in silk”; Exotic cats that look like a Persian but have short hair; Siberian cats, which history shows have been around for at least one thousand years; Sphynx cats, which are the most famous of the hairless cats, and probably made most popular in recent years by Doctor Evil from the Austin Powers movies; and Abyssinian cats, one of the oldest known breeds on this planet. One of my favorites was a plump Russian Blue Cat with a plush double coat similar to a beaver–gorgeous!

What a spectacle, these fancy cat shows! Cat toys are everywhere, grooming stations and supplies to style and fluff abound, and the large crates where the cats are displayed are decorated with animal prints, feather boas and more! In preparation for the show, cats are bathed, nails clipped, and ears cleaned. And some cats are more “high-maintenance” than others. A longhaired cat requires much more effort than a shorthaired cat and, if shown on a regular basis, must be bathed weekly and combed twice daily! What divas!

Here are a few grooming tricks I learned while I was there: By fluffing up the hair on top of a cat’s head, you can modify the appearance of large ears; to make a cat’s tail appear shorter, trim the excess hair at the end of the tail; to give the kitty a rounded look, clip the hair around the face; and to make their eyes look rounder, cut the hair over the eyes; finally, to make the cat’s neck look thicker or shorter, just comb out its ruff so that it stands out to frame its face. Do you think our favorite Hollywood stars heed any of this advice?

Even though our breeders didn’t get every answer correct in our Cat Quiz, it’s clear that these folks clearly know and love their cats. I got a particular kick out of the fact that while that the show manager assured me that cat people are not crazy, the club’s treasurer told me that the difference between cat owners and dog owners is that Dogs have “Masters,” and Cats have “Staff.”

Good thing we documented all of the cattiness on video so you can see for yourself: Watch the cat show, learn about famous felines on film & TV, and laugh at some of the funniest cats we found on YouTube.
