7 reasons why keeping chickens at home can make great pets

On an average day, if someone asked you if you wanted to have chickens, you’d probably laugh at them. Most people think that the tending of farm animals ought to be left to the farmers, and are content to merely eat them. This is kind of sad, because not only is it not that hard to keep chickens, but they are actually fine pets, on par with any of the standard animals that people like to own. Everyone knows that the dog is man’s best friend, but the chicken will not only be a dearly beloved pet, but will also pay its way at the breakfast table! What more could you ask for?

1. Chickens pull their weight

Chickens can provide

Wonderful fresh eggs – from humanely kept birds in far happier conditions than most famed birds Compost for the garden from their nitrogen rich waste Natural pest control – chickens devour insects, slugs and other pests Low fat and healthy meat Intriguing pets Low maintenance and easy to nurture A great talking point for you and the neighbours

2. You dont need lots of land to keep chicken.

“More space for chickens” may be the common  cry of most chicken lovers, but a few little bantams can do the trick in quite compact spaces. Successful chicken houses and runs can fit into the majority of gardens and back yards. Outbuildings or even old sheds can be transformed to perform the task. All that the chickens need is to nest in the day, space to move around and to perch at night safe from predators .

Understandably, some tenancy and housing agreements or deeds can have exclusion clauses to the keeping of poultry and specifically cockerels in urban areas. Even though in many cases you don’t need permissions or registration to keep a small flock, it is still advisable to recheck this aspect before you plan to bring some chickens home.

3. There’s no time needed to look after them

Is there just not enough time in your busy work schedule to walk a dog? No worries! Consider a chicken. Chickens never need you to stimulate them or exercise with them as long as you have them for company. Chickens will even put themselves to sleep as long as you leave some clean drinking water and chicken feed around. Plus, they’re a real treat to watch, especially the daily, after-sundown roosting ritual. A tame chicken, though, is one that gets the occasional care and attention of a caring owner. With some time and offerings of food, you’ll be able to feed them straight from your hand. Just my walk to the chicken run through a squeaky gate will trigger those chickens on a near stampede in hopes that I have some bread for them, even though we like to believe that the chickens are happy to see us.

4. Raising chickens is not expensive

Keeping any pet does have its expenses but chicks are very inexpensive unless you start getting into the fancier varieties. They are a relatively cheap pet to have and  not to mention also that you will enjoy some of the best freshly laid eggs that you have ever tasted.

5. Building a chicken coop is not hard work

Well you can build yourself a chicken coop from scratch using one of the many plans available. Better however to purchase a coop ready made. There are now some very good coops and runs on the market (e.g Forsham, Taylors and Amazon to name a few) and they are widely available. Check online

6. Chickens can be tamed and are no good as pets

Chickens are intriguing. They will come to you when they see you in the morning with a spring in their step. As if they are expecting you. They will follow you around the garden and keep your company as long as you are there. They are surprisingly interested in your attention with them and you will be surprised and probably will disagree with their headless chicken reputation after you have cared for them for some time.

7. Chickens are not prone to illness

Chickens are quite robust creatures. Properly cared for, they will remain happy and healthy. If you ensure clean housing, freedom to roam and a healthy diet, they should only need minimal medical attention. The better you know your chickens, the quicker you would notice any issues they contract though it is fairly rare for them to become seriously ill. It would be advisable to research chicken husbandry to have knowledge of health concerns that affect chickens, i.e. red mite, scaly leg mites and worms. One constant danger is that of avian flu and you should monitor the DEFRA website as a safeguard.     Our hope would be that you would consider chicken keeping as it is not as onerous a task as many think. The benefits include always having a conversation piece and with free-range eggs to offer, you will find your popularity soaring!

Pond Maintenance 101 Keeping Your Pond Clean

Most people have poor water quality and extra algae in their water gardens for one main reason; they don’t do enough regular maintenance to keep their pond from turning into a green mess. Ponds need to be treated just like aquariums, and require weekly maintenance to be at their best. Most pond owners and contractors are taught to only do once per year cleaning in the spring. The truth is, this is not enough. Imagine only doing once per year cleaning on your aquarium in your home. Your aquarium would look just as bad as your pond in the back yard. Your aquarium stays perfectly clean and clear because you perform weekly cleanings to remove excess fish waste and nutrition that would other wise lead to heavy algae growth and poor water quality. Your pond needs the same amount of attention to look great.

Follow my instructions below and never have poor water quality again.

#1 Get in your pond and vacuum out your pond gravel with an aquarium vacuum that you can by at any pet store once per week. This will remove allot of the fish waste that would normally build up in the bottom of your pond and cause algae problems. Doing this will also change out about 1/4 water volume on your pond every week. If you can’t find an aquarium vacuum just make sure you do weekly 1/4 water changes with a pond pump. Also find yourself a rigid type of scrub brush to scrub down the rocks or the sides of your pond. This will also keep the algae growth to a minimum. this whole process only takes about 1/1/2 hours to complete once per week. Doing this weekly maintenance never allows the fish waste to build up in your pond thus, keeping your pond clean and not green.

#2 Keep the amount of fish in your pond to a minimum, the less fish you have in your pond the less waste you will have providing nutrition to algae growth. This will make it easier to keep your pond clean. Do not feed your fish more than once per day, this will keep the fish waste down to a minimum improving water quality. You should stock your pond with goldfish, shubunkins, comets, etc… They have a max size of only 12″ inches. Their smaller size makes it easier to keep a healthy water garden. Also thin out your baby fish in the spring when you do a full clean-out on your pond. The biggest problem with most customers’ ponds is that they have way too many fish. Your pond filtration determines how many fish you can have, not the size of your pond. The average waterfall filter sold in the industry today is designed for a very small fish load. What I mean by small is 4 or 5 goldfish, shubunkins, or comets at a max size of 12″inches with no koi.

Koi get way to large for most backyard water gardens reaching an adult size of 36″ inches. It’s sad but allot of koi are forced to live out their lives in cramped under filtered ponds that stunt their growth, and lower their life span. Big fish also mean big waste; Koi can quickly turn a water garden into a green mess in record time. Koi require large ponds with perfect filtration to be at their best. We use large bead filters in conjunction with a waterfall filter when we build koi ponds. You also need to clean your waterfall filter once per month like an aquarium filter not once per year. This will also make your filter pads last allot longer than they would if you were cleaning them once per year.

#3 Remove all leaves, and spent lily and lotus blooms out of your water garden. They will rot and have to be broken down by bacteria. Which will contribute to algae growth if they are not removed from your pond. Net your pond in the fall, and do a complete pond cleanout in the spring. Drain all of the water, power-wash the pond and stream, and clean out all filters.

#4 Plant your pond with lots of aquatic plants if you’re planning a water garden with minimal fish load shubunkins, comets, ect… up to 60% of your pond’s surface should be covered with pond plants. Plants provide shade and shelter for your fish which prevents algae growth, they also consume phosphorous the main nutrient in pond water that causes algae growth. Thus helping to keep your pond clean and not green.

Keeping Rodents as Pets

Rodents make good pets. Not only are they small and easy to manage, they are also fun to watch and are typically hassle-free. While some people associate rodents with dark, dirty, and scary sewer rats, you’ll find that there are lots of cute and furry rodents that would make perfect companions for people of all ages.

The good thing about rodents is that they are pretty small. This means that you don’t need too much to keep them in your home. Also they are low maintenance. You can put them in their cage, play with them a bit, and leave them some food and they will typically take care of themselves.

Below is a list of the most common rodent pets you might consider for your household pet.

1. Hamsters-hamsters are not very long-lived rodents. They do, however, live an average of two to three years. You will need large enough cages for hamsters since they are very active. They can also be kept single, without the need for cage mates. They’re pretty agreeable especially if you handle them from the time they are very young. They can become grumpy and defensive however, especially if you wake them during the day (they are nocturnal animals).

2. Gerbils – gerbils also live up to three years. They have a furry tail that makes up about half its size. They are also very social rodents so it would be great if you purchase them in pairs. You may want to buy same-sex gerbils however, as they could rapidly procreate if left alone. They have very agreeable temperaments, but you have to refrain from holding them by the tail.

3. Mice-mice are short-lived rodents. They only live for about one to three years. They are also very fun to watch, but due to their skittish nature, they may be very hard to handle out of the cage. They don’t typically need too much room to live in. However, being social creatures, you’ll have to buy them in pairs-just remember to keep them of the same-sex so they don’t procreate uncontrollably.

4. Guinea pigs- guinea pigs are the longest lived of the here mentioned rodents. You could keep a guinea pig for about five years. They are also very gentle in nature, and aren’t averse to handling. The truth is they won’t bite even when agitated. They are pretty big, so you will need to give them enough cage space. They are social creatures, so you’ll need to keep them in pairs. You also have to supply them with an adequate supply of vegetables and vitamin C.
